Exactly 30 years since the original Toy Story movie debuted, establishing the animation giant as a major animation studio and bringing viewers to beloved figures like Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.

In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a glimpse into the storyline but keeping viewers wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Toys

The preview shows Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a brand new toy, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. Bonnie acquires her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the toys seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the teaser avoids is why the sheriff is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and helping prize toys locate loving owners.

Certainly, Pixar will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?

Connections from the Last Installment

Fortunately, some elements are continuing from the earlier movie. The last thing Woody did before setting off for his fresh path was hand over his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), entrusting her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip shows the insignia attached to her outfit.

It is hoped she is remains the driving force among the toys.
