Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
